Arrive in the lively town of San Ignacio, Belize, near the Guatemalan border. Your Inspirit guide will welcome you and get you settled in before you head out to explore. The next day, cross the border into Guatemala to one of the most magnificent archaeological sites in Latin America, Tikal. Enjoy a guided tour of the spectacular Mayan temples rising above the lush jungle canopy.

Later, board a local bus and travel to Uaxactún, a remote Mayan community, for the glamping experience of a lifetime. You’ll spend the night at a tented camp amidst ancient ruins and enjoy a guided nocturnal jungle walk. Rise early the next morning to spot exotic birds and wildlife, then dig into a delicious breakfast back at the campsite. Later, find out what makes chewing gum so chewy from the people who first produced it. Then, ride back to Tikal and on to Flores Island. Located on Guatemala’s second largest lake, Lake Petén Itzá, Flores Island is home to a quaint little town. After a guided orientation walk, enjoy a free evening to explore the island’s many restaurants and cafes.

Prepare for a day of travel over picturesque terrain as you make your way to the charming town of Lanquin and spend a relaxing evening at your lodge. The next destination on this exciting Guatemala adventure tour is the Semuc Champey National Monument, a natural limestone bridge towering over the powerful waters of the Rio Cahabón. Undertake an optional strenuous hike to a viewpoint for breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Make your way back to Lanquin in time to explore the town’s limestone caves, home to thousands of fruit bats.

Another day of travel will bring you to Antigua Guatemala. Upon arrival in Antigua, your Inspirit guide will suggest restaurants and night life in this buzzing city. On the final day of your exciting Guatemala adventure, enjoy a guided Streets and Eats experience where you’ll sample some of the country’s best street foods. Later, spend the final day of your adventure vacation exploring the historic buildings and farmer’s markets, and say goodbye to your fellow travelers.

This bestselling Central America itinerary includes incredible once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Leaving the usual gringo trail behind, you’ll be treated to temple-top views over lush jungle vegetation as far as the eyes can see, with the main temples of Tikal rising out of the trees in the far distance, while you listen to the thrilling sounds of the jungle.

You’ll savor local food in the surreal setting of a candle-lit dinner with ancient Mayan temples surrounding you. You’ll experience first-hand the local culture and the friendly Maya Itza people. And you’ll find out where the ingredients of your chewing gum come from.

Be amazed by jewels along the way, such as the stunning natural pools of Semuc Champey. Hike in a cloud forest to look for the elusive quetzal and colorful macaws. Wander the cobblestone streets of Antigua and fuel up on street food in the historic capital city on this amazing Guatemala adventure vacation which really does take you to the top places in Guatemala.

Temperatures

In Central America temperatures can vary significantly depending on time of year and altitudes. Use the guidelines below so you can adjust your packing list accordingly.

This trip visits the following climate zones:

Highlands

Temperatures on the highland plateaus are generally warm during the day and cool to cold at night. Daytime maximum Temperatures can range from 29 degrees Celsius / 84 Fahrenheit to 5 degrees Celsius 42 Fahrenheit at nighttime.

Coastal/Lowlands

In the coastal region and adjoining lowlands it is usually hot during the day and warm at night. Day time maximum Temperatures can range from 40 degrees Celsius / Fahrenheit to 104 Fahrenheit to 10 degrees Celsius 50 Fahrenheit at nighttime.

Physical Rating

Use the physical rating to help you decide if a particular trip is right for you.

This trip is rated: Normal

This is your regular everyday type of physical activity. There may be some physical aspects of the trip, but nothing that should require specific training in advance. We walk a lot on our trips. We climb hills, temples, and negotiate uneven surfaces. Paths are generally unpaved, and even pavements may feel “off road” in most places we visit. Good, sturdy footwear is required.

Additional Activities

When designing our itineraries, we look for that perfect balance of included activities and free time. Our general rule is to include the best value-for-money activities each day, allowing you to experience the “must-see-and-do’s,” or simply giving you a flavor for the local culture and nature. We also want you to enjoy a hassle free vacation, and not have to worry about searching for local activities each day of your trip. Generally, there is usually one day, maybe two, on each of our week-long trips that include some free time for booking additional activities. This is generally in the larger cities, beach destinations, or tourist hotspots, where there are many local activities and adventures to choose from. Do keep in mind that additional activities are optional, and it is totally up to you how to use that time best for yourself. Sometimes the best activity is no activity at all. Find a hammock and chill!

This trip has free time in the following destinations:

  • Antigua Guatemala

Things to do in:

Antigua Guatemala

  • Santo Domingo Monastery Hotel ($0)
  • Macadamia Farm ($5)
  • Spanish Classes ($8 per hour)
  • Salsa Lessons ($7 per hour)
  • Chocolate Workshop ($25)
  • Pacaya Volcano ($25)
  • Acatenango Volcano ($60)

(Prices are in USD and are for reference only as these are not operated directly by Inspirit)

General information

Inspirit Welcome Meeting

Our welcome meeting takes place in the morning of Day 2 of each itinerary. You’ll have a chance to meet your fellow travelers as well as your guide. Get acquainted with an overview of the itinerary, destinations visited, the Inspirit travel style, and many more details on the experiences to come. Ask any questions you may have, and let the fun begin!

For those traveling on combination trips, you’ll have the opportunity to join the meeting each week and help welcome any new passengers that are joining the trip.

Emergency contact information

For any emergencies that cannot be immediately handled with the assistance of your trip leader, our operations staff is on call 24/7. You can call / SMS  / Whatsapp / on +506 7025 9328 (Costa Rica). For local calls within Costa Rica you do not need to add the +506 country code.

Eating/dietary preferences

The food is local and delicious! Our guides will always suggest locally owned restaurants and will take you to the best value-for-your-money places we have found. A wide variety of options are available to cater for different tastes and dietary requirements. Outside of the more developed areas, it can be a challenge to cater to very specialised diets, but the locals are friendly and accommodating and will always make sure that you find enough to eat!

Water

In most areas we visit, it is not advisable to drink water from the tap (except Costa Rica). We provide you with refillable water bottles that we use throughout the trip, refilling them along the way from purified sources -- such as at your hotel, or at restaurants we visit along the route. Our aim here is to avoid single-use plastic bottles and containers to reduce our impact on the environment.

Money

Payments are best made by major credit cards. Visa is the most widely accepted card in the region. We recommend bringing emergency cash (around $300), as sometimes ATMs can be hard to find in rural areas, or the one ATM in town could be out of service.

Tour guide

Our trip leaders are Central America locals, and all are licensed tour guides in their country of origin and experts in their field. They are fun, charismatic, highly organized, and dynamic individuals with a passion for travel. Trained in areas of safety, group dynamics, effective communication, and much more, our leaders are ready to deal with any challenges that might arise on a trip.

Fellow travelers

Inspirit travelers are probably a lot like you. No matter your age, you are young at heart and have an adventurous spirit. You are interested in discovering new places, meeting new people, and having a ton of fun along the way.

Luggage

We recommend that you pack as lightly as possible. Backpacks are better than large suitcases, as we may be carrying our bags onto public buses where space is limited. Sometimes we may need to walk for a while over uneven surfaces to get between transportation hubs to to our hotel.

Keep the weight under 44 pounds (20kg). An additional day-pack is essential for excursions and transfers. Your main backpack may get stored on the roof of the bus, or in the luggage hold underneath, so you’ll want a smaller backpack that you can carry with you to keep your essential items safe. It’s a good idea to bring a TSA approved padlock to keep your bags secure.
