Delve into Mexico's fascinating history, from ancient culture to modern civilizations, starting right in the Mexican heartland — the highlands!

Arrive in Mexico City, check in to your hotel, and set off to explore the historic center of this buzzing metropolis. This evening, sample one of the most important aspects of Mexican culture in Distrito Federal (DF), the food. Tomorrow you’ll join your Mexico group tour for an in-depth exploration of one of the world’s biggest cities. Discover hidden treasures in the famous Zocalo (city center) and visit the Aztec ceremonial center of Tenochtitlán. Later in the evening, indulge in a delicious taco crawl led by your Inspirit guide.

The next day starts with a visit to the magnificent ruins of the Teotihuacán pyramids at what was once Central America’s largest city. Continue on to Puebla and join your guide on a tour of the city center. Admire the stunning architecture of the Biblioteca Palafoxiana and Puebla Cathedral. Later, perhaps enjoy a traditional Mexican wrestling show called the Lucha Libre.

Next on this bestselling Mexico itinerary is the famous pre-historic pyramid and Spanish church in the town of Cholula. Enjoy spectacular views of the snow-capped Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanos and stop at a local market to sample delicious traditional cuisine.

Then, journey overland to Oaxaca Mexico, a city steeped in culture, tradition, arts, crafts, and of course, delicious food. Enjoy a guided visit to the markets with your Inspirit guide. With a full day free to explore Oaxaca tomorrow, there’s plenty of time to see the unique petrified waterfalls at Hierve el Agua or visit an artisanal mezcal distillery. On the final day of this amazing Mexico adventure vacation, visit the famous Monte Alban ruins and enjoy magnificent views of the Oaxaca Valley.

On this amazing Mexico tour, you’ll feast on tacos where insiders eat, learn about hundreds of types of chilies, spices, and herbs in local markets, and, if you dare, sample some chapulines (grasshoppers). From trying yummy vegan tamales to making your own tortillas – this Central America itinerary brings you up close and personal to lively Mexico.

Explore Aztec temples and pyramids, where modern-day life reaches out to the past, making the best of both worlds. Learn how advanced ancient civilizations, such as the cities of Teotihuacan and Monte Alban, thrived as far back as 10,000 BC.

Consider experiencing the iconic Mexican lucha libre tradition, wander the historic streets of quaint colonial towns, immerse yourself in their charm while perhaps sipping on pure mezcal made in a local distillery or tasting what the Maya valued as much as gold – cacao.

The choice of fillings in this taco of an adventure makes the experience a feast for anyone who wants to explore Mexico on and off the beaten path!

Temperatures

In Central America temperatures can vary significantly depending on time of year and altitudes. Use the guidelines below so you can adjust your packing list accordingly.

This trip visits the following climate zone:

Highlands

Temperatures on the highland plateaus are generally warm during the day and cool to cold at night. Daytime maximum Temperatures can range from 29 degrees Celsius / 84 Fahrenheit to 5 degrees Celsius 42 Fahrenheit at nighttime.

Physical Rating

Use the physical rating to help you decide if a particular trip is right for you.

This trip is rated: Normal

This is your regular everyday type of physical activity. There may be some physical aspects of the trip, but nothing that should require specific training in advance. We walk a lot on our trips. We climb hills, temples, and negotiate uneven surfaces.  Paths are generally unpaved, and even pavements may feel “off road” in most places we visit. Good, sturdy footwear is required.

Additional Activities

When designing our itineraries, we look for that perfect balance of included activities and free time. Our general rule is to include the best value-for-money activities each day, allowing you to experience the “must-see-and-do’s,” or simply giving you a flavor for the local culture and nature. We also want you to enjoy a hassle free vacation, and not have to worry about searching for local activities each day of your trip. Generally, there is usually one day, maybe two, on each of our week-long trips that include some free time for booking additional activities. This is generally in the larger cities, beach destinations, or tourist hotspots, where there are many local activities and adventures to choose from. Do keep in mind that additional activities are optional, and it is totally up to you how to use that time best for yourself. Sometimes the best activity is no activity at all. Find a hammock and chill!

This trip has free time in the following destinations:

  • Oaxaca

Things to do in:

Oaxaca

  • Benito Juarez Park ($0)
  • Cultural Museum ($7)
  • Mezcal Tasting & Petrified Waterfalls ($30)
  • Botanical Gardens ($35)
  • Cooking Classes ($75)

(Prices are in USD and are for reference only as these are not operated directly by Inspirit)

General information

Inspirit Welcome Meeting

Our welcome meeting takes place in the morning of Day 2 of each itinerary. You’ll have a chance to meet your fellow travelers as well as your guide. Get acquainted with an overview of the itinerary, destinations visited, the Inspirit travel style, and many more details on the experiences to come. Ask any questions you may have, and let the fun begin!

For those traveling on combination trips, you’ll have the opportunity to join the meeting each week and help welcome any new passengers that are joining the trip.

Emergency contact information

For any emergencies that cannot be immediately handled with the assistance of your trip leader, our operations staff is on call 24/7. You can call / SMS  / Whatsapp / on +506 7025 9328 (Costa Rica). For local calls within Costa Rica you do not need to add the +506 country code.

Eating/dietary preferences

The food is local and delicious! Our guides will always suggest locally owned restaurants and will take you to the best value-for-your-money places we have found. A wide variety of options are available to cater for different tastes and dietary requirements. Outside of the more developed areas, it can be a challenge to cater to very specialised diets, but the locals are friendly and accommodating and will always make sure that you find enough to eat!

Water

In most areas we visit, it is not advisable to drink water from the tap (except Costa Rica). We provide you with refillable water bottles that we use throughout the trip, refilling them along the way from purified sources -- such as at your hotel, or at restaurants we visit along the route. Our aim here is to avoid single-use plastic bottles and containers to reduce our impact on the environment.

Money

Payments are best made by major credit cards. Visa is the most widely accepted card in the region. We recommend bringing emergency cash (around $300), as sometimes ATMs can be hard to find in rural areas, or the one ATM in town could be out of service.

Tour guide

Our trip leaders are Central America locals, and all are licensed tour guides in their country of origin and experts in their field. They are fun, charismatic, highly organized, and dynamic individuals with a passion for travel. Trained in areas of safety, group dynamics, effective communication, and much more, our leaders are ready to deal with any challenges that might arise on a trip.

Fellow travelers

Inspirit travelers are probably a lot like you. No matter your age, you are young at heart and have an adventurous spirit. You are interested in discovering new places, meeting new people, and having a ton of fun along the way.

Luggage

We recommend that you pack as lightly as possible. Backpacks are better than large suitcases, as we may be carrying our bags onto public buses where space is limited. Sometimes we may need to walk for a while over uneven surfaces to get between transportation hubs to to our hotel.

Keep the weight under 44 pounds (20kg). An additional day-pack is essential for excursions and transfers. Your main backpack may get stored on the roof of the bus, or in the luggage hold underneath, so you’ll want a smaller backpack that you can carry with you to keep your essential items safe. It’s a good idea to bring a TSA approved padlock to keep your bags secure.

Travelers should seek their physician’s advice on all medical matters, including travel precautions and vaccinations.

Inspirit trips may visit remote regions in developing areas, where medical care may not meet the standards of those found in a traveler’s home country.

In consideration of the safety and enjoyment of all travelers and the safe operation of a trip, pre-existing medical conditions that may impact a traveler’s ability to participate in any aspect of a trip, including pregnancy, must be disclosed at the time of booking.

Inspirit reserves the right to deny permission to travel or participate in any aspect of a trip at any time where Inspirit determines that a physical or mental condition represents a danger to the traveler or to others.

In the event of a major change, travelers may accept the change or request a full refund of the land-only portion of their trip.

Once a trip has departed, unforeseen circumstances may present operational concerns, or concerns for the health, safety, and well-being of passengers, and may require an itinerary change. Travelers are responsible for incidental expenses during a trip, including expenses arising from a change of itinerary. Inspirit will not be liable for losses associated with itinerary changes.

Flexibility

Travelers acknowledge that any foreign travel may require a certain amount of flexibility, and some changes or adjustments to the trip itinerary, schedule, activities, modes of transport, or other may be reasonably accepted due to local circumstances.
