On Mexico's stunning Yucatan Peninsula, follow the coastline south, enjoy beach time in Playa del Carmen or take an excursion to the nearby island of Cozumel, and discover the amazing ruins of Tulum by beach cruiser.

Arrive in trendy Playa del Carmen on the Mexican Riviera for your first taste of Mexico. After checking in, head out to explore the lively resort town and its many shops and restaurants. Start out easy on this Central America adventure vacation with a relaxing morning on the beach, snorkeling and swimming, or exploring the town of Playa del Carmen. There are lots of adventurous things to do, such as swimming in an underground sinkhole or heading over to neighboring Cozumel Island. Later, head to laidback Tulum with its hip atmosphere and chilled out vibe.

Start the day by riding a beach cruiser bike to the spectacular Tulum ruins, located on the edge of a towering rock overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Later, there’s time to participate in more optional activities or simply enjoy Tulum’s beautiful waterfront. The next day, you’ll make your way from Mexico to Belize, arriving by water taxi at the lively island of Caye Caulker. Your Inspirit guide will show you around and point out the best spots to witness the island’s magnificent sunsets. Tonight, enjoy a night on the town with lively music and dancing on the bustling main street. Tomorrow, with another full day to explore Caye Caulker, you can head to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, swim with nurse sharks and stingrays in Shark Ray Alley, and go kite surfing. Or, just lounge in a hammock and soak up the warm Caribbean sunshine whilst contemplating visiting some of the best places in Mexico.

Journey inland on your Belize adventure to Belize City and then on to the town of San Ignacio. After checking in to the hotel, your Inspirit guide will take you on a guided tour of the Cahal Pech Maya archaeological site. There’s also the chance to try some unique local Afro-Caribbean dishes. Later, relax poolside at your hotel or take a refreshing dip in the Macal River. The next day is free to explore the thriving border town with optional tours to the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave and a range of adventure activities such as horseback riding, inner tubing, and caving before your Central America tour comes to an end.

On this amazing Mexico and Belize itinerary, you’ll sail on turquoise Caribbean waters, stop to dive and swim in secluded spots, ease into a hammock and listen to the sound of the waves, and practice your punta skills in one of Caye Caulker’s funky hot spots. You’ll follow the path of the ancient Maya into Xibalaba, the underworld, lurking inside a dark and watery ceremonial cave. You’ll taste authentic Mayan-Caribbean foods as you sip on delicious tropical drinks made from freshly-squeezed fruit. Whatever you choose, this Mexico and Belize trip is a great mix of culture and cuisine, incredible sights, and fun in the sun.

Temperatures

In Central America temperatures can vary significantly depending on time of year and altitudes. Use the guidelines below so you can adjust your packing list accordingly.

This trip visits the following climate zone:

Coastal/Lowland

In the coastal region and adjoining lowlands is is usually hot during the day and warm at night. Day time maximum Temperatures can range from 40 degrees Celsius / Fahrenheit to 104 Fahrenheit to 10 degrees Celsius 50 Fahrenheit at nighttime.

Physical Rating

Use the physical rating to help you decide if a particular trip is right for you.

This trip is rated: Normal

This is your regular everyday type of physical activity. There may be some physical aspects of the trip, but nothing that should require specific training in advance. We walk a lot on our trips. We climb hills, temples, and negotiate uneven surfaces. Paths are generally unpaved, and even pavements may feel “off road” in most places we visit. Good, sturdy footwear is required.

Additional Activities

When designing our itineraries, we look for that perfect balance of included activities and free time. Our general rule is to include the best value-for-money activities each day, allowing you to experience the “must-see-and-do’s,” or simply giving you a flavor for the local culture and nature. We also want you to enjoy a hassle free vacation, and not have to worry about searching for local activities each day of your trip. Generally, there is usually one day, maybe two, on each of our week-long trips that include some free time for booking additional activities. This is generally in the larger cities, beach destinations, or tourist hotspots, where there are many local activities and adventures to choose from. Do keep in mind that additional activities are optional, and it is totally up to you how to use that time best for yourself. Sometimes the best activity is no activity at all. Find a hammock and chill!

  • Tulum
  • Caye Caulker
  • San Ignacio

General information

Inspirit Welcome Meeting

Our welcome meeting takes place in the morning of Day 2 of each itinerary. You’ll have a chance to meet your fellow travelers as well as your guide. Get acquainted with an overview of the itinerary, destinations visited, the Inspirit travel style, and many more details on the experiences to come. Ask any questions you may have, and let the fun begin!

For those traveling on combination trips, you’ll have the opportunity to join the meeting each week and help welcome any new passengers that are joining the trip.

Emergency contact information

For any emergencies that cannot be immediately handled with the assistance of your trip leader, our operations staff is on call 24/7. You can call / SMS  / Whatsapp / on +506 7025 9328 (Costa Rica). For local calls within Costa Rica you do not need to add the +506 country code.

Eating/dietary preferences

The food is local and delicious! Our guides will always suggest locally owned restaurants and will take you to the best value-for-your-money places we have found. A wide variety of options are available to cater for different tastes and dietary requirements. Outside of the more developed areas, it can be a challenge to cater to very specialised diets, but the locals are friendly and accommodating and will always make sure that you find enough to eat!

Water

In most areas we visit, it is not advisable to drink water from the tap (except Costa Rica). We provide you with refillable water bottles that we use throughout the trip, refilling them along the way from purified sources -- such as at your hotel, or at restaurants we visit along the route. Our aim here is to avoid single-use plastic bottles and containers to reduce our impact on the environment.

Money

Payments are best made by major credit cards. Visa is the most widely accepted card in the region. We recommend bringing emergency cash (around $300), as sometimes ATMs can be hard to find in rural areas, or the one ATM in town could be out of service.

Tour guide

Our trip leaders are Central America locals, and all are licensed tour guides in their country of origin and experts in their field. They are fun, charismatic, highly organized, and dynamic individuals with a passion for travel. Trained in areas of safety, group dynamics, effective communication, and much more, our leaders are ready to deal with any challenges that might arise on a trip.

Fellow travelers

Inspirit travelers are probably a lot like you. No matter your age, you are young at heart and have an adventurous spirit. You are interested in discovering new places, meeting new people, and having a ton of fun along the way.

Luggage

We recommend that you pack as lightly as possible. Backpacks are better than large suitcases, as we may be carrying our bags onto public buses where space is limited. Sometimes we may need to walk for a while over uneven surfaces to get between transportation hubs to to our hotel.

Keep the weight under 44 pounds (20kg). An additional day-pack is essential for excursions and transfers. Your main backpack may get stored on the roof of the bus, or in the luggage hold underneath, so you’ll want a smaller backpack that you can carry with you to keep your essential items safe. It’s a good idea to bring a TSA approved padlock to keep your bags secure.

In the event of a major change, travelers may accept the change or request a full refund of the land-only portion of their trip.

Once a trip has departed, unforeseen circumstances may present operational concerns, or concerns for the health, safety, and well-being of passengers, and may require an itinerary change.
